A balance across several media and methods usually brings the best results. If you can achieve the optimum of "tell them what you are going to tell them - tell them - tell them what you have told them" then that is the classic marketing pitch, and better still if spread across several types of media. Lastly, don't be afraid to spend up to your budget, but also don't think that every solution needs to be expensive or sometimes even too "polished" - I have often deliberately played down the presentation of the message to achieve a certain result.

There are many many other ways to get the most out of your marketing spend. The main things to remember are

  • firstly to actually plan a budget (sounds obvious but many people do not)
  •   leave a contingency for ad hoc trial spends (new magazines etc)
  •   test, test and retest
  •   track enquiries,  sales and conversions.
  •   measure spend against sales (or gross profit, whichever suits your view of your business)
  •   don't be scared to experiment with new approaches
